A power rack can turn a spare room, garage or garden gym into a serious training space. It gives you a protected place to squat, press and pull, but only if it fits both your training and your home. Knowing how to choose a power rack comes down to more than picking the biggest frame your budget allows. Measure the room, understand the safety features and buy for the way you expect to train over the next few years.
Start with your space, not the product photo
The footprint shown online is only the rack’s footprint. Your usable training area needs to be larger. You need room to walk around it, load plates onto a bar, position a bench and safely step back from the uprights when you squat.
Measure the width, depth and ceiling height of the finished space, allowing for flooring if it has not yet been installed. A rack may technically fit beneath a ceiling but leave no clearance for pull-ups, especially if you are tall or use a raised lifting platform. Garage doors, sloped ceilings, light fittings and radiators are all common obstacles in UK home gyms.
Also consider how the rack gets into the room. A unit delivered in separate boxes is manageable for most homes, but carrying long uprights up a narrow staircase or through a tight hallway can still be awkward. Consider stability, fixing and the floor underneath
